In a new report on Amazon’s Q2 grocery sales, One Click Retail notes that Amazon Grocery is still dominated by shelf-stable items such as coffee pods, but says perishable sales are steadily gathering steam, growing 110% in Q2.
“Amazon's recent investments in the grocery space have put a focus on perishables through the Prime-exclusive Prime Pantry program.
"As Prime membership continues to rapidly grow – Prime Day on June 11 was the busiest single signup day in the history of the program – perishables follow suit, driving a growth of 110% in the US during Q2.”
Meanwhile, beverages are also performing well, with two different sizes of alkaline water brand Essentia appearing in the three top growth items in the US.
One immediate insight from One Click Retail’s data is that the brands that are growing most rapidly on Amazon are not necessarily growing most rapidly in grocery stores.
Meanwhile, the top five grocery categories by dollar sales on Amazon (coffee, snack bars, bagged tea, energy drinks, and chocolate candy) are quite different to the top five in bricks & mortar (fizzy drinks, salty snacks, RTE cereal, coffee, and bottled water.)
