Lights, camera, action! Snacking trends at the Winter Fancy Food Show

What are the hottest trends in snacks? Sprouted grains? Baked popcorn? Gourmet jerky? Join Elaine Watson from FoodNavigator-USA on a snacking odyssey at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco to find out more about...

Eat Well Embrace Life, which is carving out a leading role in the ‘other bean hummus’ category, with innovations such as Spicy Red Lentil Chipotle; and Wasabi Edamame Hummus with Ginger.

Says Bob Ferraro, VP Sales, at brand owner Tryst Gourmet: "We are the fastest-growing hummus brand in the country; consumers have responded to the quality and the taste and we are in nationwide distribution."

IPS Chips, which has developed crunchy chips with egg whites and whey protein using a patent-pending modified extrusion process.

Says founder & CEO Sean Olson: "It fills you up and it's protein that your body can really use."

Way Better Snacks, a healthier snacking company founded by former Hain Celestial executive Jim Breen, which specializes in sprouted grain snacks, and has been a runaway hit since it hit shelves in 2011.

Says founder and CEO Jim Breen: "The consumer response has been terrific right out of the box."

KRAVE Jerky, which is marketed more like Godiva chocolate than Slim Jim, and comes in gourmet flavors from ‘basil citrus turkey’; and ‘black cherry barbecue pork’; to ‘pineapple orange beef’, a “Hawaiian-inspired offering of tender top round sirloin domestic beef marinated in a blend of sweet orange, pineapple and tropical fruit”.

Says founder and CEO Jon Sebastiani: "Protein has become a very important snack... and this has more protein and a third of the sugar than many bars out there."

Snacks101, which has developed what it claims is 'the first baked popcorn'.

Says partner Jeff Price: "We have a lot of differentiating characteristics that have enabled us to gain market share pretty quickly."

SexyPop, a ready-to-eat popcorn brand developed by Pirate's Booty founder Robert Ehrlich, the self-styled 'shaman of snacks', using butterfly white Japanese popcorn and a "process that filters out all the bits".

Says Ehrlich: "SexyPop is about empowerment and confidence...We are going to be the next iconic brand."
