Gellan gum added to USDA’s National List

Gellan gum has been included in the National List of non-organic ingredients allowed for use in organic foods and beverages, according to a Federal Register notice.

The National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances details non-agricultural ingredients that are allowed to be used as ingredients in foods labeled organic or made with organic ingredients, and is reviewed every five years. The original thinking behind the establishment of a National List was that it would allow a wide range of USDA certified organic foods to come to market without being restricted by scarcity of minor ingredients.

CP Kelco markets gellan gum under its Kelcogel brand. The company’s food marketing manager for the Americas Kathleen Deely said in a statement: “We are very excited to be able to now offer the unique benefits of Kelcogel gellan gum to customers who produce organic food and beverage products.”
