Processing parts specialist Thomas Precision is hoping to expand further into the international market with the development of innovative coating technology.

Working in partnership with Phygen Coating, the company is now offering its specialist coated grinding plates and blades to the wider meat market.

Using ForitPhy Coating Technology, effectively a ceramic coating which involves an innovative process of physical vapour deposition (PVD), the company claims the blades could last up to 10 years, with minimal sharpening.

Jerry Klasen, vice-president of sales for Thomas Precision, speaking at the American Meat Institute (AMI) Expo in Dallas, said grinding blades without the coating would typically need sharpening every day, and blunted blades meant lesser-quality product and increased friction leading to an increase in heat.

He said the coating allowed the blades to say sharper for far longer, with considerably reduced the need for sharpening.

“Normally you’d probably use the blade 20 to 30 times, then throw it away. But with our coated blades, we guarantee it will last 10 years.”

He said the benefits of using the coated equipment meant not only lower costs on replacement parts, but greater efficiency with less downtime for blade changeover.

The technology has been developed in conjunction with a leading US beef supplier, but Klasen said the company was now looking to roll it out to the wider market.
