Piñata, Jazz, Cameo: New apple flavors inspired by produce trends

New apple varieties are gaining in popularity in the produce section, opening opportunities for food and beverage companies to incorporate their distinctive flavors into new products, says Virginia Dare's Anton Angelich.

Varieties like Piñata, Jazz and Cameo have gained in popularity, said Angelich, Virginia Dare's group vice president of marketing, creating opportunities for incorporating these flavors in other categories, including frozen desserts, juices, and other beverages.

Green tea is one application in which apple flavors marry well with its herbal notes, he said. While green tea is well-loved for its health benefits, many people dislike its flavor, and apple works well in synergy, opening green tea to a much broader audience.
