Smithfield issues bacon reassurance

US processor Smithfield Foods has dismissed concerns over a global bacon shortage, insisting it will continue to deliver bacon products to its customers.

The company admitted that it expected a lower supply of pork in 2013, as a result of strong global demand and higher grain prices, which was putting financial strain on pork producers and causing them to cut production.

However, it said that its national network of farms would enable it to continue to supply bacon to customers “regardless of global economic drivers”.

“Smithfield Foods’ commitment to deliver high-quality wholesome bacon and bacon products will continue unabated. Our customers can count on it,” said the firm.
