The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has ruled that Mexico will continue to be classified as having “controlled risk” of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

The OIE Scientific Commission for Animal Diseases stated recently that Mexico had made good progress in disease control and surveillance, but had further to go before it met the requirements for negligible risk status, which are set out under Article 11.5.3 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

It said that the proper implementation of the ban on feeding animals with meat and bone meal of ruminant origin and its documentation would be key for Mexico to obtain the status of negligible risk for BSE.
