Cronut trademark scramble

Hot new trend? Not so new, says an Ohio baker who claims to have been making doughnut-croissant hybrids since 1991.

The cronut craze has been consuming New York since its launch at Dominique Ansel Bakery in May. But Roy Auddino says his family bakeries in Hilliard, Ohio have been selling the same hybrid products under the name of doughssant for decades.

Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York trademarked the name cronut back in spring, and the bakery claims to be the snack's inventor.

The success of the NY cronut - which saw consumers reselling the limited supply product on Craigslist for up to $25 and queues of up to four hours outside the bakery - has inspired a flood of trademark claims across the country.
