Conveyor belt firm gains halal approval

Cambridge Engineered Solutions (CES) has achieved halal certification for its metal conveyor belts used in meat production.

CES reported that all its products have been certified halal (permissible by Islamic dietary laws) by US-based Islamic Services of America (ISA), and claims it is the only US metal conveyor belt manufacturer to achieve this certification.

CES’ halal-certified conveyor belts feature items for the poultry, meat and baking industries. Brands in the range include Chain Drive, Cam-Grid, Precision, Sanigrid, Durahinge, DuraFlex and Cambri-Link and DuraLite.

"For the more than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world, halal certification tells consumers that the meat, poultry, baked goods and other foods they eat were prepared according to Islamic dietary guidelines," said Tracy Tyler, chief executive of CES.

"Unfortunately, most food processors don’t realise that metal conveyor belts are traditionally lubricated with animal by-products, most commonly pork fat, and are therefore not permissible."

CES is the world’s largest manufacturer of metal conveyor belts for the food processing industry, operating in many Muslim countries around the world, according to a company statement.

"As a global leader in conveyor equipment, we believe it’s both good and responsible business that the equipment we make and sell to food processing companies around the world could meet the dietary requirements of more than one billion observant Muslims," said Dion Banks, CES’ director of global affairs.
