In total, Neto’s Sausage recalled 7,687 pounds – over three tonnes – of beef, pork and poultry sausages after it was labelled as being checked by federal food safety inspection offices, when in fact it hadn’t been.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the recall on Wednesday 6 January 2016.
Under the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act, raw meat products sold interstate and internationally require inspection from the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The sausage products from Neto’s were produced between 28 December 2014 and 28 December 2015. They bear the establishment number EST 902 and EST 6086 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
No illnesses reported
In a statement, USDA said the problem was discovered during what it described as “routine FSIS in-commerce surveillance activities”.
The products have not been officially checked by food safety inspection officers and, so far, there have been no reported illnesses linked to consumption of any of the products.
Despite this, the USDA has categorised the recall as a Class One case – a recall that defines consumption of the product as the likely cause of serious, adverse health consequences or death.
