YouBar platform makes mass customization a reality, says CEO: 'We have no minimum order quantities'

Whether it’s a mug with your beloved pet’s picture on it, or a bespoke set of placeholders for a party you’ve ordered online, consumers love to design their own products these days. But how can mass customization work in the food industry, where minimum order quantities rule the day?

One company that seems to have nailed it is LA-based 'build-your-own-nutrition-bar' business YouBar.

The brainchild of Anthony Flynn – co-author of The New York Times bestseller Custom Nation – YouBar serves the needs of a growing number of entrepreneurs looking to build a brand, from crossfit gym owners and personal trainers to high-profile TV personalities and diet book authors building their own branded goods empires.

'Whether you want 10 bars or 10,000 bars, we can do it'

What makes YouBar special, however, is the one-stop-shop nature of its proposition, says Flynn, who caught up with FoodNavigator-USA at the 2016 Natural Products Expo West trade show in Anaheim.

It’s not just a flexible co-manufacturer; it’s a partner, product developer, designer, marketer, branding expert and online retail expert rolled into one. And there are no minimum order quantities: “Whether you want 10 bars or 10,000 bars, we can do it.”

YouBar also offers pilot trials of prototype bars to ensure the manufacturing/industrial feasibility of your recipe/formula, organoleptic testing, nutritional analysis, and water activity level testing to ensure shelf life stability, said Flynn, who also works with several small companies that are selling their wares into bricks & mortar retailers, as well as through their websites or other channels.

Indeed, Flynn was especially busy in the run up to Expo West as many exhibitors worked with YouBar to create short runs of customized products and prototypes just for the show.
