Kane Beef recalls 30 tonnes of meat

US meat processor Kane Beef has issued a voluntary recall of more than 60,000 pounds (lb) of meat after the detection of small metal fragments in its food.

Kane Beef said it was possible the foreign object found in its ground beef could be an aluminium fastener used to package its beef products. No further Kane Beef products are involved in the recall, just Kane Beef’s Hill Country Fare Ground Beef.

No one is reported to have been hurt or fallen ill as a result of consumption. Kane Beef said in a statement that it is “committed to the safety and integrity of [its] products”.

The business explained that it had been made aware of the issue after one customer passed on a “consumer complaint” from someone else who detected tiny fragments of meat in the mince beef.

One retailer affected

After hearing of this the beef business issued a recall of 60,350lb of meat – about 30 tonnes (t) of food. All of the products were manufactured at the Kane Beef processing factory in Corpus Christi, Texas, US.

All 30t of meat where shipped to three distribution centres owned by Texas supermarket chain HEB Grocery, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Kane Beef started in 1949 and processors around 6,000 steers and heifers per week which it uses for steaks, mince and other beef cuts, according to business. It suppliers beef to US retailers HEB Grocery, Publix and Rouses with involvement in exports too.
