Lopez boasts more than 18 years’ food sector experience, all of which he has spent rising up the Kraft-Heinz ranks. Before commanding a $4bn division of the multinational firm, Lopez served as a captain in the US military.
He is now president of Plumrose USA, a business JBS acquired from pork export heavyweight Danish Crown for US$230m in May 2017.
The business produces branded bacon, luncheon meat, canned ham and cooked pork ribs. It has five facilities: one in Indiana, two in Iowa, one in Mississippi and one in Vermont. Plumrose USA also runs two meat distribution centres in Indiana and Mississippi.
Iconic food brand turnaround
“It is an honour to join the JBS USA team and serve alongside some of the most respected leaders in food and agriculture,” said Lopez.
“Over the last decade, JBS USA has successfully led the turnaround and integration of iconic food brands and companies such as Swift, Pilgrim’s Pride, Moyer and Packerland. I look forward to contributing to the Plumrose USA team as we position the business for brand expansion and innovation to meet the evolving needs of today’s consumer.”
Since JBS acquired Plumrose USA, it has been on pushing ahead with plans to create a “world-class” squadron of executives that can arm it with another business to strengthen its position as a “leading global food company”.
On the appointment of Lopez, JBS USA CEO Andre Nogueira said: “Tom brings a wealth of experience in leveraging consumer marketing practices to deliver strong brand performance.
“During his public service in the military and throughout his professional career, Tom has demonstrated the unique ability to lead and engage teams to produce outstanding results. His extensive experience in building consumer brands, leading turnaround efforts, accelerating top- and bottom-line growth, and managing sales, marketing, R&D and operations, will be an incredible asset for the Plumrose USA team.”
