Brazilian plant-based brand Superbom has expanded its vegan range with a plant-based burger made from pea protein.

The company showcased the product at the APAS retail show, held in São Paulo, last week.

The product is called the Gourmet Burger and is gluten- and soy-free.

Made from pea protein concentrate, pea protein isolate and textured pea protein, it is also free from GMO ingredients, artificial preservatives, and colors.

Superbom’s director of R&D, Cristina Ferreira said: "To ensure maximum benefits to consumers, we developed a formula that has a high protein content - 15 g of protein per hamburger – juiciness, dietary fiber, vitamins A, B12, B9 and minerals such as iron and zinc."

One portion contains 7.9 g of fat.

Finding the right texture was one of the biggest challenges the company faced when formulating the burger and the R&D process took around one year.

The product, which is already available to buy in supermarkets and hotels across São Paulo, is aimed at Brazil’s growing number of vegetarians, vegans, and meat-reducers, the company said.

Superbom also launched other frozen vegan products made with pea protein, including fish analogs.

The company’s marketing director, David Oliveira said: "The vegan fish steak, for example, is an innovative item because there are few vegan foods that simulate fish meat in the Brazilian market. Therefore, we have good expectations of consumers’ receptiveness with this novelty.”

Superbom claims to be one of Brazil’s biggest vegan and vegetarian food brands. Its product portfolio includes juice, jam, ready-made dishes and honey, fruit snacks, mayonnaise, and peanut butter, and it counts more than 25,000 sales points throughout Brazil.

Founded in 1925, the company began producing grape juice on a site belonging to the Brazilian Seventh Day Adventist College (now the Adventist University Center of São Paulo), and the manufacturer continues to have direct ties to the church.

According to Superbom, the fact it is “focused on an evangelistic mission” is one of its main points of differentiation.
