Keep calm and carry on with Ocean Spray's new CBD-infused beverages

Ocean Spray is dipping its toes into the CBD-infused beverage space with the launch of CarryOn, a new line of CBD-infused sparkling waters available at the CarryOn website (shipping to Colorado only) and at AppleJack Wine & Spirits in Colorado (MSRP $4.99). Pic credit: AppleJack Wine & Spirits

"It's all about CBD-Plus..."
"It's all about CBD-Plus..."

Ocean Spray’s global chief innovation officer Rizal Hamdallah explained: "CBD is a kind of hero ingredient, but creating a cocktail with other functional ingredients makes for a better and stronger formulation. It's all about CBD-Plus. So we have two lines: Elevate (with 10mg CBD isolate, choline, vit C + E) to refresh and restore, and Descend (with 20mg CBD isolate, l-theanine, vit C+E) to be calm and collected."

Consuming CBD in beverages (as opposed to supplements) is a more pleasurable experience for some consumers and becomes part of a routine, said Hamdallah, who said Ocean Spray picked CBD isolate (as opposed to a full or broad spectrum hemp extract) because it was easier to guarantee a consistent product (no off flavors, zero THC, etc).

"We're a health & wellness company, not just a juice company"

Developed by Ocean Spray's Lighthouse Incubator team - which is tasked with exploring disruptive and emerging categories - CarryOn is designed to help the company tap into new markets, said Hamdallah: "We're a health & wellness company, not just a juice company."

The aim is to learn what works and what doesn't so the brand is ready for prime time when the FDA finally provides some clarity about the legal status of CBD in foods and beverages, added Hamdallah, who said the firm is having conversations with a leading retail chain about introducing it in Colorado at the end of the summer.

Adaptogens such as turmeric and maca also feature in a new line of organic yogurts from Trimona debuting in Whole Foods' Mid-Atlantic region. The yogurt is made with grassfed whole milk and includes the probiotic strain L. bulgaricus GLB44.

Trimona Bulgarian yogurt is not strained like Greek yogurt (the whey stays in), and has a lighter, but creamier texture, says founder Atanas Valev.

Made with Valev’s custom-selected live cultures (which he carried in his suitcase from Bulgaria in jars when he arrived in the US in the 1990s), Trimona contains no milk powders, thickeners or added sugar, has a lower pH (3.4-3.5 vs 4.0-4.9) than many other yogurts, and a ‘tangy’ taste, says Valev, an agricultural engineer and yogurt enthusiast convinced that there is life beyond Greek in the yogurt aisle.

The My/Mo brand is now in 20,000 locations, said Barnett, who said the brand is planning to launch some new innovations in 2021.
