Communication between industry, government and health organizations, and consumer nutritional education are crucial to ensuring that all Americans get adequate nutrition, according to Dr. Deshanie Rai, senior scientific leader at DSM.

As detailed in the recently released 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a large proportion of the population is lacking in several essential nutrients - but supplementation is not the only way to deal with these inadequacies, Rai said.

Speaking with FoodNavigator-USA at the Nutracon conference in Anaheim, California, she said that the use of food and supplements needs to converge to address nutrition gaps in the American diet.
