Mexico is expecting pork exports to increase in 2015, as demand for processed pork continues to grow in Asia.

According to reports in the South American press, the government’s general coordinator of livestock, Francisco Gurria Trevino, told delegates at the first symposium on environmental management in swine production units, that he expected exports of processed pork to increase to 114,000t in 2015, up from 90,000t in 2014. The value of Mexico’s processed pork export market was worth $436.9m in 2014, he said.

Addressing the audience, which was mainly made up of veterinary medicine students, Trevino said the Mexican meat industry, including vets, producers and authorities, must put more onus on the safe and proper handling of livestock and meat waste products, "since regulations of the countries to which national meat products are exported are increasingly stringent".
